Wellness tourism is on the rise, with a new focus on ‘active’ wellness. According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness trips are projected to account for 8.3% of all tourism trips by 2027, up from 7.8% in 2022 and 5.8% a decade earlier. Its data also indicates that wellness tourism will grow faster than overall tourism between 2022 and 2027, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.6% for wellness tourism, compared to a CAGR of 14.9% for overall tourism.

As Global Wellness Day – 8th June 2024 – approaches, Alda Filipe of Kronos Homes notes that not only is wellness tourism growing, it’s also evolving, as holidaymakers take a new, more dynamic approach to their health and wellbeing.

“Vale do Lobo has been serving holidaymakers as a wellness escape for decades. The natural beauty of our 450 hectares of lush greenery, our 2km-long stretch of golden sandy beach and our superb Royal Spa deliver ultimate relaxation. Interestingly, since the pandemic, we’ve seen a significant evolution in what people are seeking when it comes to wellness. There is now a far greater emphasis on ‘active wellness’ where holidaymakers want to engage in sports and join classes that get them moving. Wellness tourism isn’t just about quiet relaxation anymore.”
