Jul22493 21. Established in March 2010, Svenskt Kött i Sverige AB is an organisation that was created to provide consumers across Sweden with knowledge and inspiration about Swedish meat and its added value. Through this, it aims to foster confidence and trust in the population in relation to using local meat as a raw material. The organisation’s goal is to encourage consumers to choose Swedish beef, pork, and lamb over imported produce when they shop in food stores and dine out. According to Svenskt Kött's latest opinion poll, conducted by Novus, almost everyone in Sweden eats meat in 2023. Recent worldwide events concerning the pandemic, war, and inflation have caused changes in the market and the priorities of consumers. The media often focuses on the price of produce, but Svenskt Kött’s strives to bring into the spotlight the importance of making the right choice when it comes to purchasing meat. The organisation champions a number of key reasons why consumers should choose Swedish meat in every situation. Firstly, Sweden has some of the world’s most comprehensive and ambitious animal welfare laws. For example, it is a legal requirement in Sweden that pigs have straw, that cattle and sheep are let outside to graze in a pasture, that all animals have plenty of space when indoors, and that slaughter is done with anaesthesia. In contrast, EU law is behind, meaning many countries that Sweden imports meat from have no regulations at all. Secondly, thanks to its unique methods of infection control, Sweden uses the least antibiotics in animal rearing in the EU. When antibiotics are overused, resistant bacteria can develop. The World Health Organization believes that resistance to antibiotics is one of the biggest threats to humanity. By minimising use of antibiotics, Sweden improves animal welfare and contributes towards better food safety. However, in many of the countries that Sweden imports meat from, antibiotics are put in animals’ feed to improve growth. This has been banned in Sweden since 1986. Furthermore, Sweden has the world’s most talented farmers when it comes to low climate impact and good animal husbandry. For example, many barns have solar cells on the roof and many stables are heated by biogas from manure. The production of Swedish meat therefore emits significantly less greenhouse gas than meat produced in other parts of the world. As well as this, buying local meat in Sweden reduces transport emissions. Lastly, in meat production, Sweden is dedicated to reducing waste by utilising the whole animal. For example, it strives to ensure that more of its by-products are used for things like renewable fuels, feed for pets, and pharmaceutical production. Therefore, when buying Swedish meat, consumers can trust that less usable product has been wasted, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. More information can be found on Svenskt Kött’s website and on its downloadable brochures, including details on the myths about meat, interesting and costeffective recipes, further information about climate and sustainability in relation to meat, and more. Impressively, Svenskt Kött's most recent opinion poll demonstrated that 74 percent of consumers are willing to pay more for Swedish meat than for imported meat. As well as this, 87 percent choose to buy Swedish meat most often. When asked about the added value of Swedish meat, 85 percent believe it benefits local farmers and strengthens Swedish food production. These results are promising for Svenskt Kött. In the future, the organisation is committed to further spreading knowledge and insights in order to encourage more of the population to favour Swedish meat over imported meat. As a result of its outstanding resources, Svenskt Kött has been awarded Best Circular Food Production Knowledge Platform in the Scandinavian Business Awards 2023. We congratulate the organisation on this achievement and look forward to seeing how it continues to help the population understand the value of Swedish meat.
