Irish Enterprise Awards 2021

EU BUSINESS NEWS /2021 Irish Enterprise Awards 53 , Music School of the Year Music is away of life in Ireland and exists at the heart of Irish culture. Historically, people have kept traditions alive through song, and the award-winning Dublin School ofMusic has been doing just that since 2003. Feb21037 Located in the leafy suburb of Terenure, Dublin School of Music’s mission is to make music accessible to everyone. The school prides itself on being extremely customer focused; nothing is too much trouble and the staff are always striving to treat students the way they would like to be treated themselves. That could be by accommodating two or more members of the same family at the same time for their lessons, rescheduling lessons to suit other appointments, or arranging exams to take place in-house so that students don’t have to face the stress of trying to find a new venue. Moreover, there is always a friendly face at reception to welcome students and keep them safe, and to answer any questions and queries, even if they don’t relate to their music course. As the area has the highest concentration of top schools in the country, the population of the school’s surrounding area appreciates education and very much understands the enrichment and additional values that music education brings to a person’s life. In Ireland, it’s rarely a question of: “are you studying an instrument?”, but more likely: “which instrument(s) are you studying?” It’s uncommon to go anywhere and not hear music playing, and you’re never far from a song breaking out. The culture of Dublin School of Music is one based on respect, camaraderie and friendship. The school’s tutors have all become firm friends over the years and are always more than willing to help each other out, whether it’s by covering classes or deliberating different ways of approaching teaching. Everyone, students and teachers alike, are treated equally, regardless of age, gender, level of physical ability, background and colour. Music is the school’s language and it binds everyone in a way that nothing else can. New tutors are approached on the understanding that they are already experts in their particular area of music, but more than that, the school looks for friendly, enthusiastic, empathetic, down-to-earth people who strive at every turn to inspire, not dictate, to encourage, not show-off. The school loves to give each student the chance to grow at their own pace, within a learning space that makes people feel comfortable to make mistakes. Mistakes are how you grow as a musician, and after all, if everyone could play perfectly already, they wouldn’t need a music school! In Ireland, the music teaching industry has been impacted significantly by the pandemic, but Dublin School of Music is leading the way in embracing ‘new ways’ of delivering its services. It was the first music school in the country to pivot towards offering online lessons, which was up and running within an hour of the government’s lockdown announcement. Online lessons gave tutors the welcome opportunity to continue music lessons for students who otherwise wouldn’t have seen anyone outside of their immediate family for months. The school has incorporated these changes into its standard music tuition offering, giving students more accessibility to attend lessons if they are unable to travel to school, and opening expert lessons up to more and more people, including students who aren’t conveniently located near the school. The future has never looked brighter for Dublin School of Music. It had planned an exciting expansion for the 2020/21 academic year which COVID temporarily halted, however, 2021/22 will be the year! The addition of a second premises for September will help the school to bring its ethos and professionalism to more people. In addition, the school will soon introduce a range of bespoke online subscription courses, with much of the content being unique to the music teaching world.
