German Business Awards 2023

25. Oct23158 Whether it's the look, feel, resource efficiency or safety aspects such as corrosion protection and UV resistance – coating thickness plays a key role in all these requirements for a perfect surface. The company OptiSense from Haltern am See (Germany) has developed new solutions for contactless, fully automatic and precise testing of coating thickness at an early stage in the production process. This makes OptiSense the world's leading provider of miniaturized coating thickness measurement systems. OptiSense has received the German Business Award for this year’s Best Photothermal Measuring Systems Provider. Maximum miniaturisation in coating thickness measurement With 25 years’ experience in photothermal measuring, OptiSense creates precise solutions for coating thickness testing with non-contact, automatic detection. The innovative PaintChecker solutions include industrial inspection systems, mobile measuring devices, and numerous associated services. And because all solutions are developed and manufactured in-house – i.e. made in Germany – OptiSense can offer perfect solutions for even the most unusual applications. The measurement method behind the OptiSense success The photothermal coating thickness measurement is a contactless measurement method. The measurement is carried out without contacting the surface from a distance of several centimetres. The different thermal properties of the coating and the substrate are used to determine the coating thickness. The surface of the coating is warmed up by a few degrees with a short, intense light pulse and then cools down again by dissipating the heat into deeper areas. The thinner the coating, the faster the temperature drops. The temperature curve over time is recorded with a highly sensitive infrared sensor and converted into the coating thickness. The light pulse can be generated in various ways. Compared to xenon flash lamps, LEDs, and diode lasers offer all the advantages of semiconductor technology such as long service life, high efficiency, and absolute shock resistance. Coating thickness measurement redefined This means that wet and sticky coatings can be measured just as easily as soft and sensitive surfaces. This means that OptiSense systems can be integrated at almost any point in the coating process. The measurement results are therefore available much earlier than with contact methods and therefore allow earlier intervention in the process. Smaller. Faster. More powerful. The service portfolio supports customers with calibration, maintenance, and repair services in various service packages tailored to their company. For example, customers come from the automotive and consumer goods industries and battery production. “We are driven by the fascination of unique possibilities of contactless coating measurement technology and the resulting versatile applications. In order to live out this passion and inspire others, we strive for new insights, conduct research, and implement our comprehensive know-how in innovative solutions," explains OptiSense Managing Director Dr. Jens Heymans. "Our measuring systems are therefore characterized by state-of-the-art technologies, maximum reliability, extreme accuracy and ease of use.” A major advantage of the solution is the scalability and adaptability of the systems. The enormous success of the company is only possible thanks to the OptiSense team. The excellently trained employees are supported Best Photothermal Measuring Systems Provider 2023 by targeted measures such as internal and external training, so that they can exploit their existing potential creatively and purposefully and make the best possible use of their skills. Always with the future in view OptiSense will continue growth efforts in the next few years, based on their own strengths and the continuous and innovative development of their solutions and services. Additionally, the company is systematically expanding their portfolio with complementary solutions through strategic collaborations and our partner network. In international markets, they are further expanding their position through a comprehensive network of distributors. With this approach, OptiSense is also working to further increase the awareness of photothermal measuring. The bottom line is a comprehensive and high quality coating thickness measurement approach, which is invaluable for new developments, process optimization, quality control, and documentation of damage analyses.
